This is the basics for installing a standard three Composition shingle. You will need to remove the old roof prior to the installation of the new shingles. Installing your own shingles is a breeze. The hard part is getting the material to run straight vertically and horizontally. The shingle manufacturer has a picture on the shingle wrapper showing how to mark your horizontal and vertical lines for roof application. Each shingle manufacturer are different. Most roofing contractors adhered to the rule of two inches hangover at the bottom of the home and one and a half inch at the vertical end of the house.
